«La increíble historia de Tomás: De odiar las matemáticas a ganar una olimpiada»

Tomás Cantú Rodríguez, a native of Mexico City, won the gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2020. In the morning program «Aquí contigo,» Tomás revealed that he did not like mathematics before attending middle school.

This was Tomás Cantú’s second time competing in the Olympiad, but this time, the 18-year-old Mexican won the gold medal. Last year, the selected team was sponsored by Guillermo del Toro.

Tomás shared during the «Aquí contigo» program that his interest in mathematics did not develop until he entered middle school. Before that, he didn’t even like it. Teachers and coaches were the ones who transmitted the passion and love for mathematics to him.

This year’s Olympiad was held remotely through digital platforms to avoid COVID-19 contagion.

Tomás Cantú also said that the Olympiad was the beginning of rethinking what he wants to do with his talent; he would like to be an engineer. For him, the Olympiad has meant an opportunity to meet more people who share one of his greatest passions: mathematics.
